Voice Your Vote Campaign: Election, Inclusion, and Information

The 2019 general election saw the highest national voter turnout at 67.36%. But even in that year, urban voter turnout was 5.2% lower than the turnout in rural areas. In fact, data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) suggests that it was people from urban areas, young voters and migrant workers who formed the biggest part of the missing voters.

Elections form the very base of democracy. By not participating, we run the risk of becoming politically irrelevant. Voters need to engage with the democratic process to make it work better for them.

Many different issues seem to hold back voters, some born out of misconceptions about the voter registration process and some out of cynicism regarding the political process and one’s ability to make a difference.

This is where we need your help.

What can we do about it?

As we gear up for the 2024 general elections, YLAC is thrilled to launch its latest campaign, ‘Voice Your Vote: Election, Inclusion, and Information’. The campaign calls upon India’s youth to become ‘Voice Your Vote Ambassadors’ to raise voter awareness among urban Indians and foster discussions on inclusion and (mis)information in the electoral process. The campaign will run from 26th March until 15th May 2024.

By engaging first-time voters, the campaign aims to cultivate a sense of civic responsibility and empower individuals to play an active role in shaping the nation’s future through informed democratic participation. Ambassadors will host events, disseminate voter registration information, facilitate discussions to combat misinformation, promote inclusion and elevate voter awareness.
