Redesigning Indian Cities

The Urban Revamp Design Challenge has been conceptualised as part of a larger initiative to make urban development and planning within Bengaluru more inclusive. This is a collaborative partnership between Sensing Local, Janaagraha, Doddanekundi Rising, Banaswadi Rising and YLAC. The design challenge aims to blend technical expertise with citizen participation to transform certain parts of the city. The goal is to crowdsource good ideas and have the winners work with local communities, technical experts and implementation bodies to bring their designs to life!

The Opportunity

In March this year, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) announced that it would create 1000 kilometres of walkable footpaths in the city, resulting in the improvement of at least 5 kilometres in each ward. In order to leverage this, several of the city’s ward committees have identified their priority network that they would like to see transformed. This exercise has helped push the boundaries of public imagination beyond basic infrastructural change to transform public spaces along this network.
It is in the above context that this design challenge is inviting proposals to reimagine neighbourhood scale public spaces in two wards of Bengaluru – Doddanekundi (ward 85) and Banaswadi (ward 27). The site in Doddanekundi builds on the idea of place-keeping where the aim is to strengthen the cultural grain of an ‘urban village’ amidst a rapidly urbanising fabric, through designing a shared public space that can be used by two disparate groups of residents in the neighbourhood (the locals and the migrants). And the other site in Banaswadi builds on the idea of place-making where the aim is to revamp a long defunct buffer space on either side of a rajakaluve – an ‘urban void’, and design it to become more functional and usable by the residents of the neighbourhood.

Competition timelines


Sun 21st Nov


Form a team and register for the competition by this date. We will share submission formats, site images, satellite imagery and auto-cad drawings with all the registered participants after the 21st.

Visioning workshop

Sat 27th Nov & 4th Dec


The visioning workshop is meant to allow participants to interact with local stakeholders to understand problems on the ground with the aim of incorporating the residents’ vision into design submissions.

Teams submit their entries as per the instructions provided upon registration. All entries must come in before the 23rd of Dec.

Through the first round of shortlisting, we select proposals to be presented to local communities.

During the second public engagement, shortlisted teams present their designs to the community to seek feedback.

Announcement of winners

Winners are selected based on public feedback and evaluation by a jury of experts. Post the announcement, winners engage in further dialogue with the local community, enabling entities and implementing agencies to drive the project towards execution.

Team Composition & Submission Details

The detailed Design Brief for the competition can be accessed through the embedded link. In order to ensure that the design proposals are inclusive and take into account the needs of the community, participants will be required to attend workshops with residents and use insights from these interactions to inform their proposals.

Team Composition

The competition is open to both professionals and students from the field of architecture, urban design, public space design, spatial planning and other allied fields. The entry can be submitted as a team of individuals or as a firm/ office.
At least one member of the team should be residing in Bengaluru or be able to commute to Bengaluru for the public engagement events (visioning workshop and presentation to the community, if shortlisted).


Interested teams can register through the link here by Nov 21st 2021. All the registered participants will receive access to the additional materials including submission format (in PSD, Ai, Indd), site images, KML file of site features, High Resolution Site Map and CAD file of the site, as well as the link to the final submissions page after the 21st.
Teams are required to indicate their site of choice for the submission while registering. Teams interested in submitting for both the sites need to register twice.

Submission Guidelines

The deadline for submissions is 23rd Dec. All submissions should follow the format given to the participants and should not have any identifying markings except the registration number assigned to the team. The submission file should be in the PDF format with the registration number as the file name with the panels being titled _Panels and the writeup as _Writeup. Each submission should follow the following guidelines:

  • Submissions must be legibly composed on 2 landscape-oriented A1 sheets (59.4 cm height & 84.1 cm width) and must include an analysis of the site, detailed site master plan, concept sections, 3D views, etc. Both panels must be combined as a single PDF.
  • Any technique of the team’s choice – sketches, diagrams, 3D visualizations, physical model photos, CAD drawings, text, walkthroughs/ videos, etc. – is acceptable to convey their ideas.
  • A 500-word (maximum word limit) summary text in English, explaining the project idea and concept must be included along with the A1 sheets.
  • Cover image/ thumbnail of size 2000px x 1000px or larger in aspect ratio 2:1.

Selection of Winners

The winners of the competition will be selected based on community feedback and review by a jury of experts in the field. The winning proposals for each site will be given a prize money and will be supported by the organising team to make a pitch to the BBMP and the Ward Committees for budget allocation and implementation. All the awarded proposals will also receive a special certificate.

Prize money for each site for the best teams:

  • First Prize: Rs. 30,000
  • Second Prize: Rs. 20,000

    Frequently Asked Questions


    1. Our team wants to submit entries for both the sites. How do I do it?

    To submit proposals for both the sites, the team will have to register twice and mention the different sites in the form. However, each team can only submit one proposal per site.

    2. When will I get access to the base document package? What documents will be contained in the package?

    The base documents will be sent to the registered teams after 21st November, once registrations are closed. The package will contain:

    1. Submission Format files in PSD | AI | InDD
    2. Site Images
    3. KML file of Site Features
    4. High-Resolution Site Map
    5. CAD file of the Site plan
    3. Is it important to do a site visit and will it be facilitated by the organisers?

    It is ideally recommended that the project team visit the site at least once. The public participation event scheduled on 27th November/ 4th December will happen in the ward and will give the teams a chance to visit the site and understand the local problems. However, the team can undertake additional visits to the site(s), if they so wish. 

    4. Is it mandatory to attend the public participation event?

    Yes, it is mandatory to attend the public participation event. The event is organised for the community to share the issues that they face with the participants and we feel that this should be an important pillar on which the proposals should rest.

    5. How will the winners be selected ?

    The winners of the competition will be selected based on community feedback and review by a jury of experts in the field.

    6. What kind of support will be provided to the winners post the competition?

    The winners will be supported by the organising team to finalize the proposals. They will also be facilitated in making a pitch to the BBMP to take these ideas forward through implementation.
