Equality Clubs

At YLAC, we have been working to set up Equality Clubs in schools across India to sensitize students about the different types of inequalities that exist in society. The aim is to raise consciousness, help build empathy and appreciation of one’s own privilege, and inspire students to take action.

The clubs adopt an experiential learning approach to help students explore challenging societal problems, break stereotypes and equip them with the skills necessary to take on leadership to re-write societal norms. With an intricately designed toolkit, full of activities and resources for a facilitator to use, we hope that the Equality Clubs will become India’s catalysts for change – a place where thought-provoking debates and discussions trigger ideas to #SmashInequality that exists around us.

Theory of Change

Three elements – (1) Awareness; (2) Empathy; and (3) Action – encapsulate our theory of change. Our goal is to instill a spirit of Active Citizenship and enable students to create an impact on the world around them.

If we create spaces where rich discussions on inequality can be ignited through experiential lessons and facilitated interactions, then emotions of empathy and justice will inspire students to take action against the inequalities that exist in society.

Themes

The curriculum explores three core themes – gender equality, economic equality, and diversity & inclusion – through a mix of thought-provoking activities, discussions, and competitions that foster deeper understanding and active participation.

All content is openly available for schools, educators, and student groups to adopt and lead independently. Alongside this, our Social Action Incubator – originally the final phase of the club cycle – now runs as a standalone program to support student-led initiatives that promote equality through real-world impact.

From Pilots to a National Movement

We launched the Equality Clubs Program in 2019, piloting it in 7 schools across 4 cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Raipur. Over the next four years, the program grew rapidly – reaching over 15,000 students and 230+ schools through a network of 650+ educators across India.

As we scaled, we realised that closely monitored implementation – though effective – was resource-intensive. To deepen impact and expand reach, we made the curriculum and toolkits openly available, empowering schools and changemakers to lead the program independently in their own communities.

This shift allows us to focus on supporting a broader ecosystem – one where anyone committed to equality can access our resources and drive change from the ground up.
